Leading up to TEDxDetroit, we checked in with upcoming speaker Rob Bliss. Rob is best known for his large-scale events on the west side of the state, including dropping 100,000 paper airplanes as his entry for ArtPrize® and directing the Grand Rapids lip dub that rocked the world. Check out what he had to say about the upcoming TEDxDetroit and the city of Detroit:
Can you give us a sneak peek at your positive idea you will share at the event?
Our rules and beliefs, both as citizens and a city, must be allowed to bend so that the magic of creativity can fit its way into the hearts and minds of both parties.
What do you love most about the city of the Detroit?
I love the depth to the history of the city, the enormous amount of lessons that can be learned, and what I believe to be one of the most exciting comeback stories of our time.
In your opinion, what do you think is in store for the city of Detroit?
It’s hard to say what’s in store for the city. I think there are a lot of benchmarks to clear on the road to recovery, such as a bottoming out of population losses, school system records, etc.; but like everyone else in Michigan, I eagerly cheer the city on from the sidelines.
How do you think TEDxDetroit will impact the city of Detroit and contribute to the overall goals of TED?
I think TEDxDetroit is an essential component of the growing technology sector in Detroit, an intellectual center from which a re-branding and re-imaging of the city can begin.

To hear Rob share more about his positive ideas for the city of Detroit, as well as dozens of other fascinating speakers and artists, don’t miss this year’s TEDxDetroit conference at the Max M. Fisher Music Center on September 28. Apply for tickets today.
